Trench

17 verses

When enemy forces besieged the believers from "above and below," the psychological pressure reached such a breaking point that eyes rolled in panic and hearts rose into throats (33:10). The Quran’s account of the Trench (Al-Khandaq) bypasses the physical logistics of the siege to focus entirely on this internal fracture. It documents a moment when the community was "sorely tested and deeply shaken" (33:11), laying bare the stark division between those who stood firm despite their terror and those whose faith crumbled under the weight of an advancing army.

How did the siege test the believers?

The physical realities of the siege bred severe psychological doubt. As enemy armies massed against the city, the believers found themselves harboring ill thoughts of God in the face of apparent destruction (33:10). The disparity between divine promises and their immediate, desperate peril became a wedge for those whose faith was fragile. As al-Baghawi notes (Tafsir al-Baghawi, 6/324), the hypocrites mocked the idea that they were promised the palaces of distant empires while digging a trench in such fear they could not even step away. The Quran captures this exact sentiment, recording how the "sick at heart" declared that God and His Messenger had promised them "nothing but delusions" (33:12).

What excuses did the hypocrites make to flee?

In the face of this overwhelming threat, factions within the city actively undermined the defense. Some stood before the people of Yathrib, openly demoralizing them by insisting they could not withstand the attack and urging them to abandon their posts (33:13). Others attempted to dress their cowardice in practical concern, asking the Prophet for permission to leave the front lines by claiming, "Our houses are exposed" (33:13). The Quran strips away this pretext, stating they simply wanted to run away. It exposes their lack of loyalty by noting that had the city been invaded from all sides and they were invited to rebel, they would have joined the enemy almost without hesitation (33:14).

Their terror was so paralyzing that they wished they were out in the desert, wandering safely among the Bedouin and merely asking for news of the believers from a distance (33:20). The text observes that even if these men had stayed on the front lines, they would have hardly fought at all (33:20).

How was the siege broken?

The deliverance from the massed armies did not come through a decisive human victory, but through divine intervention. God commands the believers to remember His goodness when He sent "a violent wind and invisible forces" against the enemy ranks (33:9). Yet, the passing of the physical threat did not cure the spiritual sickness within the camp. The Quran describes how those who had begrudged the believers any help—looking at the Prophet with eyes rolling like men in their death throes during the panic—suddenly found their courage once the fear evaporated (33:19). Safe from danger, these same men attacked the believers with "sharp tongues," a hypocrisy that brought their own deeds to nothing (33:19).

The siege of the Trench stripped away all societal pretenses, leaving a permanent record of those who honored their covenant and those who treated their promises to God lightly. The final verdict on their desertion addresses the futility of escaping mortality itself: God commands the Prophet to tell them that running away will not benefit them, for even if they manage to escape the slaughter of the siege, they will only enjoy life for a short while before facing the One they cannot evade (33:16-17).

33:9 Al-Ahzab

You who believe, remember God’s goodness to you when mighty armies massed against you: We sent a violent wind and invisible forces against them. God sees all that you do.

33:10 Al-Ahzab

They massed against you from above and below; your eyes rolled [with fear], your hearts rose into your throats, and you thought [ill] thoughts of God.

33:11 Al-Ahzab

There the believers were sorely tested and deeply shaken:

33:12 Al-Ahzab

the hypocrites and the sick at heart said, ‘God and His Messenger promised us nothing but delusions!’

33:13 Al-Ahzab

Some of them said, ‘People of Yathrib, you will not be able to withstand [the attack], so go back!’ Some of them asked the Prophet’s permission to leave, saying, ‘Our houses are exposed,’ even though they were not- they just wanted to run away:

33:14 Al-Ahzab

had the city been invaded from all sides, and the enemy invited them to rebel, they would have done so almost without hesitation.

33:15 Al-Ahzab

Yet they had already promised God that they would not turn tail and flee, and a promise to God will be answered for.

33:16 Al-Ahzab

[Prophet], say, ‘Running away will not benefit you. If you manage to escape death or slaughter, you will only be permitted to enjoy [life] for a short while.’

33:17 Al-Ahzab

Say, ‘If God wishes to harm you, who can protect you? If God wishes to show you mercy, who can prevent Him?’ They will find no one but God to protect or help them.

33:18 Al-Ahzab

God knows exactly who among you hinder others, who [secretly] say to their brothers, ‘Come and join us,’ who hardly ever come out to fight,

33:19 Al-Ahzab

who begrudge you [believers] any help. When fear comes, you [Prophet] see them looking at you with eyes rolling like someone in their death throes; when fear has passed, they attack you with sharp tongues and begrudge you any good. Such men do not believe, and God brings their deeds to nothing- that is all too easy for God.

33:20 Al-Ahzab

They think the joint forces have not gone, and if the joint forces did come again they would wish they were in the desert, wandering among the Bedouin and seeking news about you [from a safe distance]. Even if they were with you [believers], they would hardly fight at all.

33:21 Al-Ahzab

The Messenger of God is an excellent model for those of you who put your hope in God and the Last Day and remember Him often.

33:22 Al-Ahzab

When the believers saw the joint forces, they said, ‘This is what God and His Messenger promised us: the promise of God and His Messenger is true,’ and this only served to increase their faith and submission to God.

33:23 Al-Ahzab

There are men among the believers who honoured their pledge to God: some of them have fulfilled it by death, and some are still waiting. They have not changed in the least.

33:24 Al-Ahzab

[Such trials are ordained] so that God may reward the truthful for their honesty and punish the hypocrites, if He so wills, or He may relent towards them, for God is forgiving and merciful.

33:25 Al-Ahzab

God sent back the disbelievers along with their rage- they gained no benefit–– and spared the believers from fighting. He is strong and mighty.
