Barrier

Where sweet rivers meet the bitter sea, they touch without merging. The Quran points to this phenomenon to illustrate the concept of a barrier (often termed barzakh or hajiz)—a boundary set by Allah that nothing can breach. These limits are not always constructed of earthly materials; they are invisible lines drawn through oceans, fortifications erected against corruption, and unseen blockades placed directly across human perception.

How do fresh and salt waters remain separate? The physical world is partitioned by borders that function without visible walls. The Quran describes Allah releasing two bodies of flowing water—one sweet and fresh, the other salty and bitter (25:53). Though these vast bodies of water meet, an insurmountable barrier stands between them that they do not cross (55:19–20). The text lists this separation alongside the stability of the earth, the flow of rivers, and the anchoring weight of immovable mountains as definitive proof of a single Creator, asking rhetorically if there could be another god beside God who orchestrates such balances (27:61).

Classical scholars debated the exact nature of this unseen division. Some early theologians questioned whether the barrier was a distinct, invisible substance placed between the waters. However, as Ibn Arafa noted, arguing for a physical third entity risks an infinite regress—if the barrier is a separate physical thing, what separates it from the waters on either side? (Tafsir Ibn Arafa, 3/257). The majority of scholars resolved this by defining the barrier through divine will rather than physical material. As Ibn al-Jawzi records, most commentators understood this barzakh simply as a direct preventative force maintained by the power of Allah (Zad al-Masir, 3/325). The sheer strength of the division derives entirely from the one who built it; because it is an act of Allah, it remains insurmountable (Tafsir al-Sha'rawi, 16/10151).

The physical fortification of Dhu’l-Qarnayn When human beings build barriers in the Quran, they do so relying on divine mandate and communal effort. A terrified population approached the powerful leader Dhu'l-Qarnayn, complaining that the tribes of Gog and Magog were ruining their land. They offered to pay him a tribute if he would construct a barrier to protect them from the devastation (18:94).

Dhu'l-Qarnayn refused their wealth, asserting that the power his Lord had already given him was better than any tribute they could collect. He did not, however, build the wall for them while they watched. Instead, he demanded their labor, telling the people to lend him their physical strength so he could erect a massive fortification between them and their enemies (18:95).

Spiritual barriers blocking sight and desire Beyond geography and defensive architecture, the Quran speaks of barriers placed directly over human perception and ultimate fate. Those who stubbornly persist in rejecting the truth are described as having barriers set before them and behind them. These unseen walls completely block their vision, rendering them unable to see the reality standing in front of them (36:9). Their physical eyes may function, but their spiritual comprehension is entirely sealed away.

This absolute separation takes its final form when judgment is delivered. For those who spent their lives deep in doubt and suspicion, a permanent barrier is eventually placed between them and what they desire, exactly as was done with others of their kind before them (34:54).
