Anger

12 verses

Fingertips bitten in secret hostility (3:119), a father’s face darkening with gloom at the news of a newborn daughter (16:58), and hearts choked by the "fury of ignorance" (48:26) physically map the pressure of anger. Rather than treating rage merely as a passing emotion, the text presents it as a defining force that dictates human allegiances and even personifies the afterlife.

How does a believer handle anger?

God identifies the righteous not as those who never feel angry, but as those "who restrain their anger and pardon people" (3:134). The classical commentator al-Baghawi clarifies that this specific restraint means suppressing the emotion precisely when the soul is completely full of it (Tafsir al-Baghawi, 2/105). This capacity for self-control is linked directly to Divine intervention. God actively sends tranquility down to the believers to counter the fury of ignorance (48:26) and promises to "remove the rage from their hearts" (9:15).

Why do opponents feel such intense rage?

A recurring theme is the sheer frustration of those who oppose the Prophets. Some will declare belief in public, but when alone, they bite their fingertips in rage at the believers; they are told simply, "Die of rage" because God knows exactly what their hearts conceal (3:119). This hostility is often provoked by the mere existence and success of the faithful. As al-Tha'labi notes, this specific fury stems directly from seeing the believers united and their affairs in order (Kashf wal-Bayan, 9/193).

An agricultural metaphor illustrates this dynamic: the believers are like a shoot that grows strong and thick on its stem to the delight of the sowers, meaning that "God infuriates the disbelievers through them" (48:29). Consequently, when the people of Medina and their neighboring desert Arabs took any step that angered the disbelievers, or suffered thirst and weariness in God's cause, a good deed was recorded in their favor (9:120).

For those consumed by anger at God's decree, a striking, almost sarcastic challenge is issued: anyone convinced God will not support His Messenger in this world and the next should stretch a rope up to the sky, climb all the way up, and see whether this elaborate strategy removes the cause of his anger (22:15). Ultimately, God states that He sends such opponents back "along with their rage," having gained no benefit at all (33:25).

How is Hell described concerning rage?

The text transfers the emotion of anger from human adversaries to the ultimate punishment itself. Hell is not an inanimate fire; it is depicted as a furious, roaring entity. When it sees its inhabitants from a distance, they will hear it "raging and roaring" (25:12). Al-Wahidi explains that this sound is the literal boiling of its intense anger against them (Tafsir al-Basit, 16/422).

The human capacity for fury—whether a Pharaoh claiming "they have enraged us" (26:55) or factions driven by the fury of ignorance—is ultimately eclipsed by the destination prepared for them. As groups are thrown in, the fire stands "almost bursting with rage," while its keepers ask the new arrivals if no one ever came to warn them (67:8).

3:119 Ali 'Imran

This is how it is: here you are, you love them, but they do not love you; you believe in all the Scriptures and when they meet you, they say, ‘We believe,’ but when they are alone, they bite their fingertips in rage at you. [Prophet], say, ‘Die of rage [if you wish]!’ God knows exactly what is in everyone’s hearts.

3:134 Ali 'Imran

who give, both in prosperity and adversity, who restrain their anger and pardon people- God loves those who do good-

9:15 At-Tawbah

and remove the rage from their hearts. God turns to whoever He will in His mercy; God is all knowing and wise.

9:120 At-Tawbah

The people of Medina and their neighbouring desert Arabs should not have held back from following God’s Messenger, nor should they have cared about themselves more than him: if ever they suffer any thirst, weariness, or hunger in God’s cause, take any step that angers the disbelievers, or cause any harm to an enemy, a good deed is recorded in their favour on account of it- God never wastes the reward of those who do good-

16:58 An-Nahl

When one of them is given news of the birth of a baby girl, his face darkens and he is filled with gloom.

22:15 Al-Hajj

Anyone who thinks that God will not support him in this world and the next should stretch a rope up to the sky, climb all the way up it, and see whether this strategy removes the cause of his anger.

25:12 Al-Furqan

When it sees them from a distance, they will hear it raging and roaring,

26:55 Ash-Shu'ara

they have enraged us-

33:25 Al-Ahzab

God sent back the disbelievers along with their rage- they gained no benefit–– and spared the believers from fighting. He is strong and mighty.

48:26 Al-Fath

While the disbelievers had fury in their hearts- the fury of ignorance- God sent His tranquillity down on to His Messenger and the believers and made binding on them [their] promise to obey God, for that was more appropriate and fitting for them. God has full knowledge of all things.

48:29 Al-Fath

Muhammad is the Messenger of God. Those who follow him are harsh towards the disbelievers and compassionate towards each other. You see them kneeling and prostrating, seeking God’s bounty and His good pleasure: on their faces they bear the marks of their prostrations. This is how they are pictured in the Torah and the Gospel: like a seed that puts forth its shoot, becomes strong, grows thick, and rises on its stem to the delight of its sowers. So God infuriates the disbelievers through them; God promises forgiveness and a great reward to those who believe and do righteous deeds.

67:8 Al-Mulk

almost bursting with rage. Its keepers will ask every group that is thrown in, ‘Did no one come to warn you?’
