Angry

12 verses

When hypocrites smile in public but retreat to isolation, they bite their fingertips in sheer rage at the believers, prompting the command to tell them: "Die of rage [if you wish]!" (3:119). Across twelve verses, the Arabic concept of ghayz (anger, rage, or fury) emerges as a consuming, physical state. It darkens the face of a man who receives the news of a newborn daughter, filling him with gloom (16:58). It is an intense internal pressure that dictates actions and tests human hearts, distinguishing the fury of ignorance from the tranquility granted to the faithful.

How does the text depict the anger of opponents?

The scripture portrays the rage of those who oppose the truth as a futile, self-destructive force. During conflicts, God describes sending the disbelievers back empty-handed, utterly consumed by their rage while gaining no benefit whatsoever (33:25). This hostility is rooted in what the text calls the "fury of ignorance" gripping their hearts, contrasting sharply with the tranquility God sends down upon His Messenger and the believers (48:26). The verses even mock the extreme lengths to which this helpless frustration drives people. For anyone who angrily assumes God will not support His Messenger in this world and the next, the text issues a sarcastic challenge: they should stretch a rope all the way up to the sky, climb it, and see if this elaborate strategy finally removes the cause of their anger (22:15).

Why does the growth of the believers cause rage?

While the believers are commanded to be compassionate among themselves, their very existence and success actively infuriate those who reject faith. The text compares the followers of Muhammad to a seed that puts forth a shoot, grows thick, and stands strong on its stem. This thriving crop delights the sowers, but God explicitly uses it to infuriate the disbelievers (48:29). As al-Thalabi notes (Tafsir al-Thalabi, 9/193), this particular rage stems directly from witnessing the believers united and their affairs in order. Because of this dynamic, enduring hardship in God's cause or taking any step that angers the disbelievers is recorded as a good deed for the people of Madinah and the surrounding desert Arabs (9:120).

How are the righteous told to handle their own anger?

The believers themselves are not immune to anger, but their spiritual standing depends on how they process it. The text counts restraining anger and pardoning people among the defining traits of those who do good, alongside giving charity in both prosperity and adversity (3:134). This restraint requires immense internal effort; as al-Baghawi points out (Tafsir al-Baghawi, 2/105), this specific virtue means swallowing and holding back one's anger precisely when the soul is completely full of it. Ultimately, moving past anger is a divine gift, as God promises to turn to whoever He wills in His mercy and physically remove the rage from their hearts (9:15).

In the hereafter, the text transfers the emotion of rage from human hearts to the landscape of the next life. Hell is personified as a furious entity that recognizes those who rejected the truth. When the fire sees them approaching from a distance, they will clearly hear it raging and roaring (25:12). As al-Wahidi explains (al-Tafsir al-Basit, 16/422), this roaring is the distinct sound of its boiling wrath directed entirely at them. As every new group is thrown into it, the inferno is described as almost bursting with rage, while its keepers simply ask the condemned if no one ever came to warn them (67:8).

3:119 Ali 'Imran

This is how it is: here you are, you love them, but they do not love you; you believe in all the Scriptures and when they meet you, they say, ‘We believe,’ but when they are alone, they bite their fingertips in rage at you. [Prophet], say, ‘Die of rage [if you wish]!’ God knows exactly what is in everyone’s hearts.

3:134 Ali 'Imran

who give, both in prosperity and adversity, who restrain their anger and pardon people- God loves those who do good-

9:15 At-Tawbah

and remove the rage from their hearts. God turns to whoever He will in His mercy; God is all knowing and wise.

9:120 At-Tawbah

The people of Medina and their neighbouring desert Arabs should not have held back from following God’s Messenger, nor should they have cared about themselves more than him: if ever they suffer any thirst, weariness, or hunger in God’s cause, take any step that angers the disbelievers, or cause any harm to an enemy, a good deed is recorded in their favour on account of it- God never wastes the reward of those who do good-

16:58 An-Nahl

When one of them is given news of the birth of a baby girl, his face darkens and he is filled with gloom.

22:15 Al-Hajj

Anyone who thinks that God will not support him in this world and the next should stretch a rope up to the sky, climb all the way up it, and see whether this strategy removes the cause of his anger.

25:12 Al-Furqan

When it sees them from a distance, they will hear it raging and roaring,

26:55 Ash-Shu'ara

they have enraged us-

33:25 Al-Ahzab

God sent back the disbelievers along with their rage- they gained no benefit–– and spared the believers from fighting. He is strong and mighty.

48:26 Al-Fath

While the disbelievers had fury in their hearts- the fury of ignorance- God sent His tranquillity down on to His Messenger and the believers and made binding on them [their] promise to obey God, for that was more appropriate and fitting for them. God has full knowledge of all things.

48:29 Al-Fath

Muhammad is the Messenger of God. Those who follow him are harsh towards the disbelievers and compassionate towards each other. You see them kneeling and prostrating, seeking God’s bounty and His good pleasure: on their faces they bear the marks of their prostrations. This is how they are pictured in the Torah and the Gospel: like a seed that puts forth its shoot, becomes strong, grows thick, and rises on its stem to the delight of its sowers. So God infuriates the disbelievers through them; God promises forgiveness and a great reward to those who believe and do righteous deeds.

67:8 Al-Mulk

almost bursting with rage. Its keepers will ask every group that is thrown in, ‘Did no one come to warn you?’
