Afternoon
العشي
11 verses
In Quranic vocabulary, the late afternoon—known as al-'ashiyy—marks the closing of the day. Classical scholar al-Wahidi defines it simply as the final part of daylight (Al-Tafsir al-Basit, 5/242). It is the specific period just before sunset when the sun's light weakens and begins to turn yellow, as noted by al-Farahi (Mufradat al-Quran, 221). Within the text, this fading period serves as a defining bookend to human consciousness and spiritual routine, almost always paired with the morning to encompass the entirety of a believer's devotion.
When is praise commanded in the afternoon?
The Quran repeatedly establishes the afternoon as a primary time for remembering God. Believers are instructed to glorify their Creator both "morning and evening" (33:42), an injunction tied directly to supporting and honoring the Messenger (48:9). This temporal rhythm extends beyond human worship. God declares that praise is due to Him across the heavens and the earth specifically "in the late afternoon, and at midday" (30:18). Even the natural world participates in this evening devotion; the mountains were made to join David in glorifying God at sunset and sunrise (38:18).
For the devout, this time is fiercely protected. The Quran warns against turning away those who call upon their Lord morning and evening "seeking nothing but His Face," stating that driving such believers away would make one an evildoer (6:52). This enduring practice was also maintained by previous prophets, such as Zechariah, who emerged from the sanctuary to signal his people to maintain their praise through the morning and the evening hours (19:11).
What events occur during the close of day?
The fading light of the afternoon serves as the backdrop for specific worldly and otherworldly events. It was "near the close of day" when Solomon reviewed his well-bred, light-footed horses, inspecting his regal cavalry (38:31). In Mecca, the Prophet's detractors used this established time of gathering and rest to accuse him of plagiarism, claiming the revelations were merely "ancient fables" being dictated to him "morning and evening" (25:5).
Conversely, in the afterlife, this earthly cycle of time is elevated into a promise of eternal security. For those admitted to Paradise, where they hear only peaceful talk and nothing bad, divine provision is continuously granted to them "morning and evening" (19:62).
How does the afternoon measure human life?
The timeframe of the late afternoon frequently emphasizes the brevity of worldly existence. Classical commentators connected the afternoon closely with the conceptual passage of time; Ibn Abbas noted that the term for time, al-'asr, refers directly to the period before sunset known as the 'ashiyy (Mawsu'at al-Tafsir al-Ma'thur, 23/537).
The Quran leverages this specific slice of daylight to illustrate the shock of the Day of Judgment. When the final reality is revealed, the entirety of human history and individual lifetimes will shrink in the human mind. The long years of earthly struggle and delay will collapse into a mere fraction of a single day. On the Day they see it, it will seem they lingered in this life an evening at most, or its morning (79:46).

Do not drive away those who call upon their Lord morning and evening, seeking nothing but His Face. You are in no way accountable for them, nor they for you; if you drove the believers away, you would become one of the evildoers.
He went out of the sanctuary to his people and signalled to them to praise God morning and evening.
There they will hear only peaceful talk, nothing bad; there they will be given provision morning and evening.
and they say, ‘It is just ancient fables, which he has had written down: they are dictated to him morning and evening.’
praise is due to Him in the heavens and the earth- in the late afternoon, and at midday.
and glorify Him morning and evening:
And [We subjected] the wind for Solomon. Its outward journey took a month, and its return journey likewise. We made a fountain of molten brass flow for him, and some of the jinn worked under his control with his Lord’s permission. If one of them deviated from Our command, We let him taste the suffering of the blazing flame.
We made the mountains join him in glorifying Us at sunset and sunrise;
When well-bred light-footed horses were paraded before him near the close of day,
so that you[people] may believe in God and His Messenger, support Him, honour Him, and praise Him morning and evening.
