When the Prophet Lot addresses his community, his shock is rooted in the unprecedented nature of their behavior. He confronts a society that has normalized same-sex relations, demanding to know why they have set aside the spouses created for them by God (26:165–166). The Quranic address of homosexuality is bound entirely to the historical narrative of this specific city. Through Lot’s dialogue, the text presents their actions not merely as private failings, but as a deliberate and collective break from the natural bounds of human relationships that governed earlier generations.

Was this practice known before Lot's people?

The Quran frames the sexual behavior of Lot’s people as a historical first. When speaking to the men of his city, Lot states outright that they "practise outrageous acts that no people before you have ever committed" (29:28). His questioning highlights the isolation of their choices relative to the rest of humanity. He asks why they, "unlike [other] people, lust after males" (26:165). The narrative does not treat their desires as an expected human variation, but rather as an invented, severe transgression introduced into the world by this specific society, completely foreign to the human societies that predated them.

How does the text describe their choices?

The verses consistently contrast the actions of Lot's people with the intended design for human partnership. Lot asks his community directly how they can "lust after men instead of women," calling them "fools" for upending this natural order (27:55). The core of the grievance centers on this substitution. By pursuing men, Lot explains, the people actively "abandon the wives that God has created for you" (26:166). The language of the Quran characterizes this shift as "exceeding all bounds" (26:166). The phrasing underscores that absolute limits exist regarding sexual conduct. Bypassing the spouses God provided constitutes a direct, conscious violation of those established boundaries.

Were these actions isolated from their wider society?

The sexual transgressions of Lot's people occurred alongside a broader collapse of social morality and safety. When Lot rebukes the men of his city, he links their same-sex acts to public violence and public shamelessness. He asks them, "How can you lust after men, waylay travellers, and commit evil in your gatherings?" (29:29). The sexual behavior is positioned within a wider culture of aggression. Their hostility toward vulnerable outsiders on the roads matched their willingness to openly endorse wrongdoing in their communal meeting places. It was a community that had completely dismantled its moral guardrails in both private desires and public conduct.

Faced with these direct warnings about their conduct and its consequences, the community offered no justification, nor did they claim ignorance of the prophet's message. Their reaction was rooted entirely in open defiance against the limits Lot reminded them of. Rather than reflect on their departure from the natural order, they challenged him to prove his warnings real, replying only, "Bring God’s punishment down on us, if what you say is true" (29:29).
