Nursing
6 verses
The Quran establishes a complete term of two whole years for suckling an infant, framing early childhood nourishment not just as a biological necessity, but as a legal period governed by strict financial rights and mutual parental consent. Rather than leaving a child’s early years entirely to local custom, the text details exactly who bears the cost of a nursing mother's livelihood, how families must negotiate weaning, and the permanent familial bonds created by the sharing of milk.
Financial Rights and the Term of Weaning
A full nursing term lasts twenty-four months for parents who wish to complete it (2:233). During this period, the father is strictly responsible for providing the mother with fair clothing and maintenance. This financial duty is so deeply embedded in the child's rights that if the father passes away, the exact same obligation falls upon his heir. The Quran emphasizes that these arrangements must not become a source of extortion or neglect: neither the mother nor the father should be made to suffer harm or take on a burden beyond their financial and physical capacity.
This protection extends directly into the laws of divorce. A divorced mother who suckles her former husband's infant must be paid for her labor, and the parents are instructed to consult together in a respectful manner regarding the child's care (65:6). If the mother chooses to stop nursing before the two-year mark, she cannot do so unilaterally; early weaning requires mutual consent and consultation from both parents (2:233). When difficulties arise between the divorced couple, or if the mother cannot nurse, the father is permitted to hire another woman to suckle the child, provided he compensates the wet nurse fairly.
The Bonds of Milk Kinship
Being nursed by a woman establishes a permanent legal kinship that alters family structures. The Quran explicitly forbids men from marrying their "milk-mothers and milk-sisters" alongside blood relatives and step-relations (4:23). As Al-Wahidi notes (Al-Tafsir al-Basit, 6/417), without the act of nursing, these specific women would be lawful to marry, but the sharing of milk fundamentally transforms their status into that of permanently prohibited relatives. This means that a hired wet nurse becomes legally tied to the infant, functioning as a mother in matters of marital eligibility, and her daughters become the child's sisters.
Wet Nurses and Divine Intervention
The mechanics of nursing also appear in the Quran as instruments of divine protection. When the mother of Moses feared for his life, she received direct inspiration to first suckle him before casting him into the river, carrying a promise that he would eventually be returned to her (28:7). Once the infant was taken in by Pharaoh's household, God ordained that he would instinctively refuse to feed from any of the court's wet nurses (28:12). This biological refusal created a crisis that allowed Moses' sister to step forward and recommend a household that could rear him, seamlessly reuniting the starving infant with his own mother.
The physical and emotional intensity of a mother feeding her infant serves as the ultimate baseline for human attachment. To convey the sheer severity of the final hour, the text describes a psychological rupture so profound that on the Day of Judgement, "every nursing mother will think no more of her baby, every pregnant female will miscarry, you will think people are drunk when they are not, so severe will be God’s torment" (22:2).

Mothers suckle their children for two whole years, if they wish to complete the term, and clothing and maintenance must be borne by the father in a fair manner. No one should be burdened with more than they can bear: no mother shall be made to suffer harm on account of her child, nor any father on account of his. The same duty is incumbent on the father’s heir. If, by mutual consent and consultation, the couple wish to wean [the child], they will not be blamed, nor will there be any blame if you wish to engage a wet nurse, provided you pay as agreed in a fair manner. Be mindful of God, knowing that He sees everything you do.
You are forbidden to take as wives your mothers, daughters, sisters, paternal and maternal aunts, the daughters of brothers and daughters of sisters, your milk-mothers and milk-sisters, your wives’ mothers, the stepdaughters in your care- those born of women with whom you have consummated marriage, if you have not consummated the marriage, then you will not be blamed- wives of your begotten sons, two sisters simultaneously- with the exception of what is past: God is most forgiving and merciful-
on the Day you see it, every nursing mother will think no more of her baby, every pregnant female will miscarry, you will think people are drunk when they are not, so severe will be God’s torment.
We inspired Moses’ mother, saying, ‘Suckle him, and then, when you fear for his safety, put him in the river: do not be afraid, and do not grieve, for We shall return him to you and make him a messenger.’
We had ordained that he would refuse to feed from wet nurses. His sister approached them and said, ‘Shall I tell you about a household which could bring him up for you and take good care of him?’
House the wives you are divorcing according to your means, wherever you house yourselves, and do not harass them so as to make their lives difficult. If they are pregnant, maintain them until they are delivered of their burdens; if they suckle your infants, pay them for it. Consult together in a good way- if you make difficulties for one another, another woman may suckle the child for the father––
