Smoke

8 verses
At the moment the heavens and earth were ordered into their final form, the sky existed as a hazy expanse of smoke. In Quranic imagery, smoke (dukhan) brackets the physical universe, appearing at the dawn of creation and returning as a sign of earthly torment and a fixture of the afterlife. It is never a neutral element; it either bows to divine command or serves as an inescapable affliction.
Was the universe created from smoke? The Quran identifies smoke as the primordial state of the heavens. Before the cosmos took its current shape, God turned to the sky "which was smoke" (41:11). The text does not present this as a chaotic byproduct of destruction, but as raw material awaiting a directive. God commands both the smoky sky and the earth, "Come into being, willingly or not," to which the nascent creations respond in unison, "We come willingly" (41:11). The smoke is thus characterized by its absolute submission to the Creator, forming the foundation of the heavens as we know them.
What is the smoke in the sky? Chapter 44 of the Quran is named after this phenomenon, Al-Dukhan (The Smoke), and carries a severe warning of a Day "when the sky brings forth clouds of smoke for all to see" (44:10). This haze is described as an oppressive force that will "envelop the people," prompting them to cry out in recognition of a terrible torment (44:11).
Classical commentators document how this warning materialized for the early opponents of the Prophet in the form of a devastating famine. As Ibn Kathir notes (Tafsir Ibn Kathir, 6/592), the starvation reached such extremes that people resorted to eating dead meat and bones. When they lifted their eyes upward, physical exhaustion and sheer hunger caused them to see a haze resembling smoke between themselves and the sky. Muhammad b. Abdullah Draz also records this period of severe drought, highlighting how the affliction directly answered their rejection (Al-Naba' al-Azim, 150). The envelopment was both physical and psychological; the atmosphere grew so thick and disorienting that a man could speak to his companion without being able to see him through the gloom, as Ibn Ajibah explains (Al-Bahr al-Madid, 5/281).
How is smoke described in Hell? In the afterlife, smoke ceases to be a mere warning or a trick of exhausted eyes, becoming an active mechanism of retribution. A sudden "flash of fire and smoke" will be released upon those facing punishment, leaving them entirely without aid (55:35).
The Quran systematically inverts the earthly expectation of shade as a source of comfort. Those condemned to the Fire will dwell "amid scorching wind and scalding water" (56:42). Their only refuge from this heat is "in the shadow of black smoke" (56:43). This dark canopy provides no relief, explicitly described as "neither cool nor refreshing" (56:44).
The confinement within this atmosphere is absolute. The wrongdoers are enveloped from all sides by a Fire prepared specifically for them, choking off any route of escape. If they call out in desperation for relief from the heat and the suffocating black smoke, they will only be relieved with water like molten metal, scalding their faces in what the text calls a terrible drink and a painful resting place (18:29).

Say, ‘Now the truth has come from your Lord: let those who wish to believe in it do so, and let those who wish to reject it do so.’ We have prepared a Fire for the wrongdoers that will envelop them from all sides. If they call for relief, they will be relieved with water like molten metal, scalding their faces. What a terrible drink! What a painful resting place!
Then He turned to the sky, which was smoke––He said to it and the earth, ‘Come into being, willingly or not,’ and they said, ‘We come willingly’––
[Prophet], watch out for the Day when the sky brings forth clouds of smoke for all to see.
It will envelop the people. They will cry, ‘This is a terrible torment!
A flash of fire and smoke will be released upon you and no one will come to your aid.
They will dwell amid scorching wind and scalding water
in the shadow of black smoke,
neither cool nor refreshing.
