the Ark and the Flood

6 verses

The narrative of the Ark and the Flood opens not with the construction of a vessel, but with a direct, urgent theological mandate. When God sent Noah to his community, the messenger stood before them to issue a strict instruction. Addressing them intimately as “My people,” he commanded them to serve God alone, stating unequivocally that they had no other deity (7:59). The foundation of the impending disaster was built on this baseline warning, as Noah expressed his immediate dread that they would soon face the punishment of a fearsome Day.

What did Noah preach before the flood?

Noah’s approach to his community was defined by persistence and earnest counsel. He positioned himself not as a ruler, but as a conduit, explicitly telling the people that he was delivering his Lord’s messages (7:62). Beyond merely reciting warnings, he offered them sincere advice, carrying a heavy burden of prophetic knowledge. He stated plainly that he knew things from God that they did not, emphasizing the gap between their everyday reality and the divine reality he was commissioned to share.

The ultimate goal of his mission was never destruction. Noah questioned why they found his presence so difficult to accept, asking if it was truly strange that a message from their Lord would arrive through a man in their very midst (7:63). He explained the exact mechanics of his prophethood: he was there to warn them, to make them acutely aware of God, and to do so specifically so that they might receive divine mercy. Deliverance was offered openly through a human being they already knew.

Why did the leaders reject Noah?

The response to this offer of mercy came primarily from the top of the social hierarchy. The prominent leaders of Noah's people were swift and dismissive in their opposition (7:60). Rather than engaging with his call to worship God alone, they attacked his credibility and mental state, openly declaring that they believed he was far astray.

Noah immediately defended both his sanity and the legitimacy of his mission. He reiterated his connection to them while firmly correcting their accusation. There was nothing astray about him; on the contrary, he operated with the highest possible authority as a messenger from the Lord of all the Worlds (7:61). The leaders' skepticism was rooted in their inability to fathom that the Creator would select an ordinary, familiar man to speak on His behalf. Their disbelief in human prophethood became the stumbling block that prevented them from heeding the warnings.

Who survived the flood on the Ark?

The final fracture between the messenger and his community occurred when the people collectively dismissed his sincere advice and branded him a liar (7:64). In direct response to this definitive rejection, divine intervention arrived to separate the two groups. God acted to save Noah alongside those who were with him on the Ark. The vessel became the absolute physical boundary between life and death, entirely dictated by who had accepted the revelation.

The text draws a stark, unrelenting conclusion for the rest of the population. Those who called Noah a liar were categorically drowned. Their destruction is not described merely as a natural disaster, but as the direct consequence of rejecting divine signs. The floodwaters served as the terminal judgment against a community that proved themselves wilfully blind to the warnings they were offered.
