11 verses

God established a direct continuity of revelation across generations, embedding the Psalms (al-Zabur) within a chain of "enlightening scripture" and "books of wisdom" given to earlier messengers (3:184). Rather than a general abstraction, the Quran identifies this specific text as a book granted to David, placing it alongside other major revelations as clear evidence for humanity to reflect upon (16:44).

Who received the Psalms?

The Quran places the Psalms within a long, specific lineage of prophetic inspiration. Revelation came to the Prophet Muhammad just as it did to Noah, Abraham, Ishmael, Isaac, Jacob, the Tribes, Jesus, Job, Jonah, Aaron, and Solomon. Concluding this extensive list of prophets, the Quran explicitly singles out David's scripture: "to David We gave the book [of Psalms]" (4:163). This was a deliberate mark of divine preference. God, who knows everyone in the heavens and the earth, states that He "gave some prophets more than others," citing the Psalms given to David as the primary manifestation of this elevation (17:55).

What was written in the Psalms?

Unlike scriptures centered on detailed religious law, classical commentators note the unique theological nature of this text. As al-Balansi observes (Tafsir mubhamat al-Quran, 1/449), the Psalms contained no commands or prohibitions, nor rulings of lawful and unlawful. Instead, the Quran highlights a specific eschatological guarantee recorded within it. God declares, "We wrote in the Psalms, as We did in [earlier] Scripture: ‘My righteous servants will inherit the earth’" (21:105).

This specific verse sparked a broader discussion among early scholars about the exact scope of the word Zabur. While referring distinctly to David's book, some classical exegetes viewed the term as encompassing a wider category of divine writing in certain contexts. According to Sa'id bin Jubayr, as noted by al-Tabari (Jami al-bayan, 16/432), "Zabur" in the context of inheritance refers collectively to the Torah, the Gospel, and the Quran, written after the heavenly record (al-Dhikr). Ibn al-Jawzi (Zad al-Masir, 3/217) adds that other interpretations define the Psalms in this verse as all revealed books generally, with the Dhikr specifically referring to the Torah.

How do the Psalms relate to other revelations?

The Quran constantly frames the Psalms as part of a unified message. When addressing the rejection faced by the Prophet Muhammad, God reminds him that earlier messengers were sent with identical tools, coming to their people with "clear signs, scriptures, and enlightening revelation" (35:25). The truth of the Quranic message was not an isolated or unprecedented event, as it "was foretold in the scriptures of earlier religions" (26:196).

The presence of these earlier texts serves as a warning to those who deny the prophets. The Quran challenges deniers by asking if they are somehow better than destroyed nations of the past, or if they were "given an exemption in the Scripture" (54:43). The ultimate fate of all people, regardless of which scripture they received, remains meticulously preserved, as "Everything they do is noted in their records" (54:52).

The scriptures granted to earlier religions laid the groundwork for all subsequent revelation, carrying wisdom to people who often rejected it (3:184). In the Psalms, God equipped David with clear signs for humanity to reflect upon, cementing the unalterable promise that His righteous servants will ultimately inherit the earth (21:105).
