When humanity existed as a single, undivided community, the need for arbitration had not yet emerged. As differences and rivalries fractured this unity, prophets were dispatched to intervene (2:213). They did not come empty-handed; they were entrusted with the Scripture containing the Truth, sent down specifically to judge between people regarding the matters they disputed.
Why were messengers sent?
The core mandate of every sent messenger was remarkably focused: to deliver good news and to warn (6:48). This dual purpose served to establish clear consequences for human actions. On the Day of Judgment, a direct question will be posed to the gathered company of jinn and mankind, asking if messengers came from among their own ranks to recite revelations and warn them of that exact meeting (6:130). Those who believed the message and aligned their deeds with the good news are promised an existence where they will have no fear, nor will they grieve (6:48). Conversely, those who allowed the fleeting life of this world to seduce them will find the messengers' warnings serving as undeniable evidence. They will be left to testify against themselves that they consciously rejected the truth (6:130).
How did they communicate?
To ensure the revelation was understood without ambiguity, every messenger was sent speaking the specific language of his own people (14:4). The structural objective of prophethood was utter clarity, removing any excuse of miscommunication. A prophet did not arrive as an alien figure speaking an incomprehensible tongue; he came from among his immediate audience, using their native words to make the divine instructions plain. Yet, providing clear communication did not guarantee acceptance. The delivery of the message was the messenger's duty, but the outcome rested entirely with divine decree, as the Almighty, the All Wise, leaves whoever He will to stray, and guides whoever He will (14:4).
What did they do for their communities?
Beyond delivering texts, prophets actively intervened to shift their communities' trajectory and mindset. Moses, for example, was sent with visible signs and a direct command to bring his people out from the depths of darkness into the light (14:5). This required grounding the community in their own history and the stark realities of divine intervention. Moses was instructed to remind his people of the "Days of God," a historical reflection that contains distinct signs for anyone who remains steadfast and thankful (14:5). Fulfilling this, he recalled the specific, brutal suffering they had endured under Pharaoh's people—who systematically slaughtered their sons while sparing only their women. Moses framed this intense oppression and their subsequent rescue not as mere history, but as a severe test and a profound blessing from their Lord that demanded remembrance (14:6).
The arrival of these clear signs and messengers did not automatically unify those who received them. The very populations granted the scripture often fell into further disagreement over it, driven by internal rivalry even after the truth was made apparent (2:213). Yet through this fracture, by His leave, God guided the believers to the exact truth they had differed about, directing whoever He wills to a straight path (2:213).

كَانَ ٱلنَّاسُ أُمَّةً وَٰحِدَةً فَبَعَثَ ٱللَّهُ ٱلنَّبِيِّـۧنَ مُبَشِّرِينَ وَمُنذِرِينَ وَأَنزَلَ مَعَهُمُ ٱلْكِتَـٰبَ بِٱلْحَقِّ لِيَحْكُمَ بَيْنَ ٱلنَّاسِ فِيمَا ٱخْتَلَفُوا۟ فِيهِ ۚ وَمَا ٱخْتَلَفَ فِيهِ إِلَّا ٱلَّذِينَ أُوتُوهُ مِنۢ بَعْدِ مَا جَآءَتْهُمُ ٱلْبَيِّنَـٰتُ بَغْيًۢا بَيْنَهُمْ ۖ فَهَدَى ٱللَّهُ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ لِمَا ٱخْتَلَفُوا۟ فِيهِ مِنَ ٱلْحَقِّ بِإِذْنِهِۦ ۗ وَٱللَّهُ يَهْدِى مَن يَشَآءُ إِلَىٰ صِرَٰطٍ مُّسْتَقِيمٍ
Mankind was a single community, then God sent prophets to bring good news and warning, and with them He sent the Scripture with the Truth, to judge between people in their disagreements. It was only those to whom it was given who disagreed about it after clear signs had come to them, because of rivalry between them. So by His leave God guided the believers to the truth they had differed about: God guides whoever He will to a straight path.
وَمَا نُرْسِلُ ٱلْمُرْسَلِينَ إِلَّا مُبَشِّرِينَ وَمُنذِرِينَ ۖ فَمَنْ ءَامَنَ وَأَصْلَحَ فَلَا خَوْفٌ عَلَيْهِمْ وَلَا هُمْ يَحْزَنُونَ
We send messengers only to give good news and to warn, so for those who believe and do good deeds there will be no fear, nor will they grieve.
يَـٰمَعْشَرَ ٱلْجِنِّ وَٱلْإِنسِ أَلَمْ يَأْتِكُمْ رُسُلٌ مِّنكُمْ يَقُصُّونَ عَلَيْكُمْ ءَايَـٰتِى وَيُنذِرُونَكُمْ لِقَآءَ يَوْمِكُمْ هَـٰذَا ۚ قَالُوا۟ شَهِدْنَا عَلَىٰٓ أَنفُسِنَا ۖ وَغَرَّتْهُمُ ٱلْحَيَوٰةُ ٱلدُّنْيَا وَشَهِدُوا۟ عَلَىٰٓ أَنفُسِهِمْ أَنَّهُمْ كَانُوا۟ كَـٰفِرِينَ
‘Company of jinn and mankind! Did messengers not come from among you to recite My revelations to you and warn that you would meet this Day?’ They will say, ‘We testify against ourselves.’ The life of this world seduced them, but they will testify against themselves that they rejected the truth:
وَمَآ أَرْسَلْنَا مِن رَّسُولٍ إِلَّا بِلِسَانِ قَوْمِهِۦ لِيُبَيِّنَ لَهُمْ ۖ فَيُضِلُّ ٱللَّهُ مَن يَشَآءُ وَيَهْدِى مَن يَشَآءُ ۚ وَهُوَ ٱلْعَزِيزُ ٱلْحَكِيمُ
We have never sent a messenger who did not use his own people’s language to make things clear for them. But still God leaves whoever He will to stray, and guides whoever He will: He is the Almighty, the All Wise.
وَلَقَدْ أَرْسَلْنَا مُوسَىٰ بِـَٔايَـٰتِنَآ أَنْ أَخْرِجْ قَوْمَكَ مِنَ ٱلظُّلُمَـٰتِ إِلَى ٱلنُّورِ وَذَكِّرْهُم بِأَيَّىٰمِ ٱللَّهِ ۚ إِنَّ فِى ذَٰلِكَ لَـَٔايَـٰتٍ لِّكُلِّ صَبَّارٍ شَكُورٍ
We sent Moses with Our signs: ‘Bring out your people from the depths of darkness into light. Remind them of the Days of God:there truly are signs in this for every steadfast, thankful person.’
وَإِذْ قَالَ مُوسَىٰ لِقَوْمِهِ ٱذْكُرُوا۟ نِعْمَةَ ٱللَّهِ عَلَيْكُمْ إِذْ أَنجَىٰكُم مِّنْ ءَالِ فِرْعَوْنَ يَسُومُونَكُمْ سُوٓءَ ٱلْعَذَابِ وَيُذَبِّحُونَ أَبْنَآءَكُمْ وَيَسْتَحْيُونَ نِسَآءَكُمْ ۚ وَفِى ذَٰلِكُم بَلَآءٌ مِّن رَّبِّكُمْ عَظِيمٌ
And so Moses said to his people, ‘Remember God’s blessing on you when He saved you from Pharaoh’s people, who were inflicting terrible suffering on you, slaughtering your sons and sparing only your women––that was a severe test from your Lord!
