only mortal human

5 verses

The sight of a chosen prophet buying provisions in the local square offended observers waiting for a spectacular, supernatural display of divine authority. Confronted with a man who needed to sustain himself, the critics objected aloud, asking what sort of messenger eats food and walks about in the marketplaces (25:7). To them, a true emissary from the heavens should be exempt from the daily grind of commerce and survival, perhaps accompanied by an angel sent down to share the heavy duty of warning the public. But the revelation consistently anchors its messengers in the ordinary, inescapable physical realities of the people they were sent to guide.

Did the prophets have superhuman bodies?

The demand for an angelic presence or a supernatural being stemmed from a common assumption that direct contact with the divine required an escape from human limits. The verses correct this by starkly defining the physical boundaries of the prophets. None of the emissaries sent before Muhammad were granted bodies that functioned without nourishment (21:8). They required daily meals to survive, feeling hunger and fatigue exactly like the crowds they addressed. Nor were any of them immortal; they aged and eventually faced death. Their strict mortality was not a flaw in their design, but a deliberate choice. They were simply men to whom God had given the Revelation (16:43).

Who was chosen to deliver the warnings?

Rather than dispatching luminous strangers or detached beings, the heavy task of revelation was entrusted to local individuals already woven into the fabric of society. The men chosen for this burden were raised among the people of their own towns (12:109). Because they lived in those same neighborhoods and walked those same markets before any inspiration came to them, their character and humanity were known quantities. The sole distinction between the messenger and the skeptical public was the inspiration itself. By speaking through familiar men, the warnings remained immediately relevant to the community's exact struggles and transgressions.

How can doubters verify this pattern?

When skeptics continually doubted that the Creator would speak through a mere mortal who ate and walked among them, they were directed toward historical precedent. The pattern of choosing mortal, inspired men was firmly established long before the events in seventh-century Arabia (21:7). For those who lacked this context and rejected the human messenger standing in front of them, the instruction was straightforward: ask the people who already possess knowledge of the earlier Scriptures. Those previous communities would confirm that every single messenger sent in the past was solely a mortal man who received inspiration.

The physical vulnerability of these men did not diminish the reality of their warnings, nor did it stall the judgment that eventually fell upon the towns that mocked their ordinary nature. The remnants of past civilizations that rejected their local messengers remain visible in the land for travelers to witness. The physical ruins demonstrate the severe cost of ignoring a warning simply because the one delivering it had to eat and sleep. Ultimately, the temporary nature of both the messenger and the mocking crowds gives way to a permanent reality, reminding the mindful that the Home in the Hereafter is better, and asking those who witness the ruins of the past, "Do you not use your reason?" (12:109).

12:109 Yusuf

All the messengers We sent before you [Muhammad] were men to whom We made revelations, men chosen from the people of their towns. Have the [disbelievers] not travelled through the land and seen the end of those who went before them? For those who are mindful of God, the Home in the Hereafter is better. Do you [people] not use your reason?

16:43 An-Nahl

[Prophet], all the messengers We sent before you were simply men to whom We had given the Revelation: you [people] can ask those who have knowledge if you do not know.

21:7 Al-Anbya

And even before your time [Prophet], all the messengers We sent were only men We inspired–– if you [disbelievers] do not know, ask people who know the Scripture––

21:8 Al-Anbya

We did not give them bodies that ate no food, nor were they immortal.

25:7 Al-Furqan

They also say, ‘What sort of messenger is this? He eats food and walks about in the marketplaces! Why has no angel been sent down to help him with his warnings?
