Human existence begins in the Quranic text with a sequence that bridges the earth to the womb: an origin from dust, followed by a drop of fluid, progressing into a clinging form. This biological progression is not presented merely as a natural phenomenon, but as a deliberate sequence engineered by a Creator who fashions the two sexes and oversees every stage of development from conception to old age. By meticulously tracing the stages of physical reproduction and maturation, the text directly addresses human doubt regarding life after death, using the undeniable reality of our initial formation to demonstrate the inevitability of a second creation.
How are the stages in the womb described?
The physiological development of the human fetus follows a precise vocabulary of sequential transformation. A "drop of spilt-out sperm" is first converted into a "clinging form" (75:37-38). From this clinging stage, God shapes the entity into a lump of flesh, which is characterized in one instance as being "both shaped and unshaped" (22:5). The structural foundation develops as this lump of flesh is made into bones, and those bones are subsequently clothed with flesh. Following these physical stages, the entity is made into "other forms," prompting the declaration that God is the best of creators (23:14). During this internal shaping in due proportion, the Creator fashions the developing life into the two distinct sexes, male and female (75:38-39). The specific duration any fetus remains in the womb is not random, but is determined by God's choice, causing it to remain there for an "appointed time" before being brought forth into the world (22:5).
Who controls conception, aging, and death?
The mechanisms of reproduction and the trajectory of the life cycle that follows are tightly bound to divine knowledge and predetermined records. No female conceives a child or gives birth without God's direct knowledge (35:11). Once brought forth as infants, human beings are allowed to grow and reach physical maturity, but their ultimate earthly trajectories quickly diverge. Some individuals have their lives cut short and die young, while others are left to live on to an advanced old age, reaching a state where they "forget all they once knew" (22:5). Neither the gradual aging process nor a premature death occurs arbitrarily; every variation in human lifespan happens strictly in accordance with a written Record, an administration that the text insists is entirely "easy for God" (35:11). The ultimate purpose of moving through these life stages and reaching an appointed term, whether early or late, is so that individuals may reflect on their inherent condition and origins (40:67).
Why trace human origins to a drop of fluid?
The detailed breakdown of human reproduction directly targets theological skepticism, specifically doubts concerning the Resurrection. The text explicitly links these two concepts: if a person doubts that the dead can be raised, they are instructed to remember their own physical origins from dust, then a drop of fluid, and then a tiny, clinging form (40:67). The argument rests on a demonstration of capability. By defining the steps of human growth—from the womb to infancy, maturity, and decline—the text means to make divine power clear to the observer (22:5). The entity capable of orchestrating such a complex transformation from an unshaped lump of flesh into a conscious human being can naturally replicate the process to restore life.
To further cement this reality, the hidden conception and birth of human life is mirrored in the observable, botanical world. The process of human resurrection is likened to the dormant, barren earth. An observer may see the ground seemingly lifeless and dry, yet when water is sent down upon it, the soil stirs, swells, and produces every kind of joyous growth (22:5).

People, [remember,] if you doubt the Resurrection, that We created you from dust, then a drop of fluid, then a clinging form, then a lump of flesh, both shaped and unshaped: We mean to make Our power clear to you. Whatever We choose We cause to remain in the womb for an appointed time, then We bring you forth as infants and then you grow and reach maturity. Some die young and some are left to live on to such an age that they forget all they once knew. You sometimes see the earth lifeless, yet when We send down water it stirs and swells and produces every kind of joyous growth:
then We made that drop into a clinging form, and We made that form into a lump of flesh, and We made that lump into bones, and We clothed those bones with flesh, and later We made him into other forms––glory be to God, the best of creators!––
It is God who created you from dust and later from a drop of fluid; then He made you into two sexes; no female conceives or gives birth without His knowledge; no person grows old or has his life cut short, except in accordance with a Record: all this is easy for God.
It is He who created you from dust, then from a drop of fluid, then from a tiny, clinging form, then He brought you forth as infants, then He allowed you to reach maturity, then He let you grow old- though some of you die sooner- and reach your appointed term so that you may reflect.
Was he not just a drop of spilt-out sperm,
which became a clinging form, which God shaped in due proportion,
fashioning from it the two sexes, male and female?
