7 verses

The Quranic description of human development begins with a handful of dust and a drop of fluid. Across multiple passages, the text outlines a precise sequence of physiological changes occurring within the womb—from a fluid drop to a clinging form, then a lump of flesh, then bones clothed in muscle. These stages are repeatedly invoked not merely as biological mechanics, but as a direct challenge to those who doubt the reality of resurrection. If God can assemble a living human from formless fluid, the verses argue, raising the dead is an easy task.

What are the stages of human development in the womb?

The sequence of prenatal development is detailed most explicitly in the text's description of the transition from conception to full bodily form. The process begins with a "drop of fluid" or "spilt-out sperm," which becomes a "clinging form" (75:37-38). This clinging entity is then made into a "lump of flesh," which the Quran specifies can be "both shaped and unshaped" (22:5). From this lump, bones are formed, and those bones are subsequently "clothed... with flesh" before developing into a distinct human shape (23:14). While Al-Sha'rawi views these specific physiological descriptions as an unprecedented miracle in the text (Mu'jizat al-Quran, 33), Bint al-Shati’ critiques the modern tendency to rely solely on foreign biological references to understand verses revealed long ago (Al-Tafsir al-Bayani, 2/18). The core textual focus remains on the creator's power, concluding the biological sequence by declaring, "glory be to God, the best of creators!" (23:14).

How does the Quran connect gestation to the Resurrection?

The descriptions of a fetus in the womb are frequently deployed to address skepticism about life after death. In addressing people who doubt the Resurrection, the Quran demands they reflect on their own origins: moving from dust, to a fluid drop, to a tiny clinging form (40:67). The text draws a direct parallel between the gestation of a human and the revival of dry land. Just as fluid transforms dust into a living infant, water sent down upon a lifeless earth causes it to "stir and swell" and produce joyous growth (22:5). The implication is that both processes—the assembly of a child in the womb and the resurrection of the dead—operate by the exact same divine mechanism.

How are lifespan and sex determined?

Beyond the physical shaping of flesh and bone, the verses tie the determination of sex and lifespan to divine knowledge and decree. From the clinging form, God shapes the entity in due proportion and fashions the two sexes, male and female (75:38-39). The text emphasizes that no female conceives or gives birth outside of God's direct knowledge, and that every individual's aging process or early death happens in accordance with a pre-existing Record (35:11). The time spent in the womb is fixed for an "appointed time" (22:5), after which the individual is brought forth as an infant to eventually reach maturity.

The trajectory of human life is framed as a continuous biological and spiritual arc that extends into inevitable mortality. Whether one lives to an age where they forget all they once knew, or has their life cut short sooner, the progression through these distinct bodily forms unfolds according to a precise decree. The passage from dust, to a fluid drop, to an infant, and finally to frail old age occurs entirely to a set term, so that you may reflect (40:67).

22:5 Al-Hajj

People, [remember,] if you doubt the Resurrection, that We created you from dust, then a drop of fluid, then a clinging form, then a lump of flesh, both shaped and unshaped: We mean to make Our power clear to you. Whatever We choose We cause to remain in the womb for an appointed time, then We bring you forth as infants and then you grow and reach maturity. Some die young and some are left to live on to such an age that they forget all they once knew. You sometimes see the earth lifeless, yet when We send down water it stirs and swells and produces every kind of joyous growth:

23:14 Al-Mu'minun

then We made that drop into a clinging form, and We made that form into a lump of flesh, and We made that lump into bones, and We clothed those bones with flesh, and later We made him into other forms––glory be to God, the best of creators!––

35:11 Fatir

It is God who created you from dust and later from a drop of fluid; then He made you into two sexes; no female conceives or gives birth without His knowledge; no person grows old or has his life cut short, except in accordance with a Record: all this is easy for God.

40:67 Ghafir

It is He who created you from dust, then from a drop of fluid, then from a tiny, clinging form, then He brought you forth as infants, then He allowed you to reach maturity, then He let you grow old- though some of you die sooner- and reach your appointed term so that you may reflect.

75:37 Al-Qiyamah

Was he not just a drop of spilt-out sperm,

75:38 Al-Qiyamah

which became a clinging form, which God shaped in due proportion,

75:39 Al-Qiyamah

fashioning from it the two sexes, male and female?
