Loan

القرض

12 verses

The Quran addresses the concept of a loan with absolute pragmatism in human affairs and striking intimacy in matters of faith. While interpersonal debt requires rigorous documentation to protect both parties, the text also frames voluntary charity as a direct, personal loan made to God Himself. This dual approach establishes strict administrative rules for earthly borrowing while promising that wealth spent for a higher cause is never lost, but deposited for an exponential return.

How does the Quran regulate lending and borrowing?

To prevent doubt and ensure equity, the Quran commands that any debt contracted for a stated term must be put in writing (2:282). This instruction forms the core of the Quran’s longest single verse. A scribe must record the agreement justly, and the debtor—or their guardian, if the debtor is weak or unable—is required to dictate the terms. Two men, or one man and two women, are to be called as witnesses. The text insists that people should not disdain writing down a debt, whether small or large, along with its due date, as this method is more reliable as testimony and prevents future disputes. The only stated exception to this documentation is when merchandise is handed over immediately in spot trade.

When individuals are traveling and cannot find a scribe, a tangible item should be handed over as security, acting as collateral (2:283). If the parties simply decide to trust one another, the one trusted must fulfill that trust without concealing evidence. Furthermore, financial obligations hold immense weight in the division of an estate: before an inheritance can be distributed to a deceased person’s children, parents, or spouses, all outstanding debts and bequests must be fully settled (4:11, 4:12).

What if a debtor is struggling to repay?

The requirement to document a debt protects the lender, but the Quran heavily emphasizes mercy toward a borrower who falls on hard times. If a debtor is in difficulty, the lender is instructed to delay repayment until matters become easier (2:280). Taking this a step further, the verse states that writing off the debt entirely as an act of charity is even better for the lender. Debt is recognized as a heavy burden; the Quran twice confirms that the Prophet does not demand any payment that would burden his people with debt (52:40, 68:46). For those who are entirely overwhelmed by what they owe, institutional help is available: the Quran specifies that the prescribed alms are meant specifically for categories of vulnerable people, explicitly including "those in debt" (9:60).

What does it mean to lend to God?

Beyond human commerce, the Quran repeatedly asks, "Who will make God a good loan?" (57:11). This "good loan" (qard hasan) serves as a recurring metaphor for spending wealth in the way of God. As noted by the scholar al-Hasan, this refers to all avenues of righteousness (Al-Tafsir al-Basit, 4/313). Similarly, Ibn al-Ahnaf specifies that such a loan must come from lawful wealth and be spent seeking God's reward (Al-Bustan fi I'rab Mushkilat al-Quran, 3/334). The scholar al-Qushayri observes a profound dynamic in this phrasing: while the verse highlights the rank of the wealthy who are asked to give, the rank of the poor is even greater, because God is asking for the loan on their behalf (Lata'if al-Isharat, 1/189).

When believers support messengers, keep up the prayer, and offer this good loan, the Quran promises that their sins will be wiped out (5:12). Far from diminishing a person's wealth, the transaction is guaranteed by a Creator who promises to double it and reward the giver generously (57:11). The night vigil and daily struggles of life are acknowledged with the reminder to simply recite what is easy, pay the prescribed alms, and offer this loan, knowing that whatever good is stored up will be improved and multiplied by a God who is ever thankful and forbearing (73:20, 64:17).

2:280 Al-Baqarah

If the debtor is in difficulty, then delay things until matters become easier for him; still, if you were to write it off as an act of charity, that would be better for you, if only you knew.

2:282 Al-Baqarah

You who believe, when you contract a debt for a stated term, put it down in writing: have a scribe write it down justly between you. No scribe should refuse to write: let him write as God has taught him, let the debtor dictate, and let him fear God, his Lord, and not diminish [the debt] at all. If the debtor is feeble-minded, weak, or unable to dictate, then let his guardian dictate justly. Call in two men as witnesses. If two men are not there, then call one man and two women out of those you approve as witnesses, so that if one of the two women should forget the other can remind her. Let the witnesses not refuse when they are summoned. Do not disdain to write the debt down, be it small or large, along with the time it falls due: this way is more equitable in God’s eyes, more reliable as testimony, and more likely to prevent doubts arising between you. But if the merchandise is there and you hand it over, there is no blame on you if you do not write it down. Have witnesses present whenever you trade with one another, and let no harm be done to either scribe or witness, for if you did cause them harm, it would be a crime on your part. Be mindful of God, and He will teach you: He has full knowledge of everything.

2:283 Al-Baqarah

If you are on a journey, and cannot find a scribe, something should be handed over as security, but if you decide to trust one another, then let the one who is trusted fulfil his trust; let him be mindful of God, his Lord. Do not conceal evidence: anyone who does so has a sinful heart, and God is fully aware of everything you do.

4:11 An-Nisa

Concerning your children, God commands you that a son should have the equivalent share of two daughters. If there are only daughters, two or more should share two-thirds of the inheritance, if one, she should have half. Parents inherit a sixth each if the deceased leaves children; if he leaves no children and his parents are his sole heirs, his mother has a third, unless he has brothers, in which case she has a sixth. [In all cases, the distribution comes] after payment of any bequests or debts. You cannot know which of your parents or your children is more beneficial to you: this is a law from God, and He is all knowing, all wise.

4:12 An-Nisa

You inherit half of what your wives leave, if they have no children; if they have children, you inherit a quarter. [In all cases, the distribution comes] after payment of any bequests or debts. If you have no children, your wives’ share is a quarter; if you have children, your wives get an eighth. [In all cases, the distribution comes] after payment of any bequests or debts. If a man or a woman dies leaving no children or parents, but a single brother or sister, he or she should take one-sixth of the inheritance; if there are more siblings, they share one-third between them. [In all cases, the distribution comes] after payment of any bequests or debts, with no harm done to anyone: this is a commandment from God: God is all knowing and benign to all.

5:12 Al-Ma'idah

God took a pledge from the Children of Israel. We made twelve leaders arise among them, and God said, ‘I am with you: if you keep up the prayer, pay the prescribed alms, believe in My messengers and support them, and lend God a good loan, I will wipe out your sins and admit you into Gardens graced with flowing streams. Any of you who now ignore this [pledge] will be far from the right path.’

9:60 At-Tawbah

Alms are meant only for the poor, the needy, those who administer them, those whose hearts need winning over, to free slaves and help those in debt, for God’s cause, and for travellers in need. This is ordained by God; God is all knowing and wise.

52:40 At-Tur

Do you [Prophet] demand a payment from them that would burden them with debt?

57:11 Al-Hadid

Who will make God a good loan? He will double it for him and reward him generously.

64:17 At-Taghabun

if you make a generous loan to God He will multiply it for you and forgive you. God is ever thankful and forbearing;

68:46 Al-Qalam

Do you demand some reward from them that would burden them with debt?

73:20 Al-Muzzammil

[Prophet], your Lord is well aware that you sometimes spend nearly two-thirds of the night at prayer––sometimes half, sometimes a third––as do some of your followers. God determines the division of night and day. He knows that you will not be able to keep a measure of it and He has relented towards all of you, so recite as much of the Quran as is easy for you. He knows that some of you will be sick, some of you travelling through the land seeking God’s bounty, some of you fighting in God’s way: recite as much as is easy for you, keep up the prayer, pay the prescribed alms, and make God a good loan. Whatever good you store up for yourselves will be improved and increased for you. Ask God for His forgiveness, He is most forgiving, most merciful.
