God declares that He is the one "who gave everything its form, then gave it guidance" (20:50). This guidance operates on multiple levels. The physical world follows established rules, which are only suspended by divine intervention; as Nur al-Din Itr notes (Ulum al-Quran, 195), physical miracles function specifically by breaking the customary laws of nature, allowing people to recognize the supernatural. Alongside the physical universe, the Quran focuses heavily on the spiritual baseline instilled in humanity. This inherent disposition is not a blank slate but a definitive orientation toward pure faith. The text presents this natural state as an unalterable creation, framing true devotion as a strict alignment with the very design of the human soul (30:30).
How does the Quran define human nature?
The text identifies specific, unalterable traits embedded in human behavior. A primary characteristic is a reflex toward immediate results: "Man was created hasty" (21:37). In this verse, God instructs the Prophet to tell his impatient audience not to ask Him to hasten His signs. Alongside this impulse, human cognition is fundamentally bounded. When questioned about the essence of the Spirit, the Prophet was told to reply that the Spirit belongs exclusively to God's domain, and that humanity has "only been given a little knowledge" (17:85).
Classical scholars examined how these inherent qualities drive human action. Abu Hafs al-Nasafi explains (Al-Taysir fi al-Tafsir, 9/470) that a person operates according to their underlying disposition or nature (tabīʿa). Yet this natural inclination is not a standalone moral compass. Abd al-Qahir al-Jurjani observes (Darj al-Durar, 1/312) that human nature or mere intellect might instinctively recoil from certain realities, even when divine revelation dictates that those realities are beneficial.
What happens when people violate their natural disposition?
Because the correct religion is explicitly defined as the "natural disposition God instilled in mankind" (30:30), rejecting revelation is portrayed as an act of self-corruption. The Quran warns that those who actively work to undermine divine signs will face a "torment of painful suffering" (34:5). Assuming one can violate this established order and emerge unscathed is a severe miscalculation. Ibn Kamal Basha illustrates this (Tafsir Ibn Kamal Basha, 8/356) by comparing the act of committing a sin with the mere expectation of repenting later to swallowing poison and foolishly relying on the physical body's "strength of nature" to fend off the toxins.
The text equates true guidance with accepting the Lord's revelations, stating that those who reject them invite a "woeful torment" (45:11). The deviation from pure faith manifests heavily in hypocritical and idolatrous individuals who harbor evil thoughts about God. For such men and women, the departure from their original disposition culminates in being "encircled by evil" and prepared for an agonizing destination (48:6).
The friction between human haste, limited knowledge, and divine instruction ultimately resolves in the restoration of the original design. The natural order established by God leaves no permanent sanctuary for deviation. Instead, the final reality aligns with the command given to the Prophet: "The truth has come, and falsehood has passed away: falsehood is bound to pass away" (17:81).

And say, ‘The truth has come, and falsehood has passed away: falsehood is bound to pass away.’
[Prophet], they ask you about the Spirit. Say, ‘The Spirit is part of my Lord’s domain. You have only been given a little knowledge.’
Moses said, ‘Our Lord is He who gave everything its form, then gave it guidance.’
Man was created hasty: I will show you My signs soon, so do not ask Me to hasten them.
So [Prophet] as a man of pure faith, stand firm and true in your devotion to the religion. This is the natural disposition God instilled in mankind- there is no altering God’s creation- and this is the right religion, though most people do not realize it.
But as for those who work against Our Revelations, seeking to undermine them, there will be a torment of painful suffering.
This is true guidance; those who reject their Lord’s revelations will have a woeful torment.
and to torment the hypocritical and idolatrous men and women who harbour evil thoughts about God––it is they who will be encircled by evil!––who carry the burden of God’s anger, whom God has rejected and for whom He has prepared Hell, an evil destination!
