Depositories

Rain does not fall at random, nor does sustenance materialize by chance; rather, the Quran describes a reality where every single thing originates from divine depositories (khazain). These storehouses hold the entirety of existence and provision, which God releases into the physical world strictly "according to a well-defined measure" (15:21). Whether it is the harvest that sustains a nation or the weather systems that water a valley, the ultimate reserves rest entirely outside human ownership or origin.

Who controls the earth's reserves?

The Quran explicitly severs the human illusion of controlling natural resources. God sends winds to fertilize the land and brings down water from the sky for humanity to drink (15:22). While people may dig wells, construct cisterns, or build vast agricultural systems to temporarily hold this provision, the verses establish a strict boundary regarding its origin, stating plainly of these natural sources, "you do not control its sources" (15:22). The absolute reserves remain hidden and guarded.

Even the prophets possessed no independent access to these divine vaults. As al-Wahidi records from Ibn Abbas, when prophets clarify that they do not possess the khazain of God, it means they do not hold the keys to these infinite reserves (Al-Tafsir Al-Basit, 11/ 404). They, like all creation, must wait for whatever the Creator chooses to dispense.

How do human and divine storehouses differ?

When earthly resources are placed into human hands, the burden shifts to administration and the limitations of human nature. The prophet Joseph recognized the immense gravity of managing physical depositories during a looming crisis. He specifically asked the king to place him in charge of the nation’s storehouses, grounding his request in two essential qualities for handling finite resources: "I shall manage them prudently and carefully" (12:55). His meticulous approach contrasts sharply with the baseline human disposition toward wealth.

If humanity were somehow granted the infinite divine depositories, their stewardship would fail completely due to inherent anxiety. The Quran notes that even if people possessed the absolute stores of God’s bounty, they "would hold them back in your fear of spending," bluntly adding that "man is ever grudging" (17:100). Unlike the divine release of provision that continually sustains the earth, human hands instinctively clutch and hoard out of a fear of depletion.

Understanding the true location of these storehouses strips away the pretense of self-sufficiency. Acknowledging that every resource is held back or measured out by a single Divine authority leaves a person in a state of active, conscious reliance. After watering the flocks for two women in Midian, having fled his former life with nothing, Moses withdrew into the shade and voiced his total dependence on those unseen depositories, praying, "My Lord, I am in dire need of whatever good thing You may send me" (28:24).
